The Nearest Amenities - What every Resident should know Part 1/2

Here's a little directory for those who want to get around in the estate.

3 nearest Coffeeshops - Don't just depend on the Hawker Centre, these are the nearest 3 sussed out.

amenities_whampoa1(1) Wong Poh Coffeeshop at St Michael's Interchange - 200 m walk (Zi char / Fish Head Steamboat, Indian Food Spice Central, Mix Vegetables Rice, Malay food - nasi lemak, mee reebus etc). If you take a bus back, go all the way to the Bus Terminal and tabao some food back.

(2) 74 Whampoa Dr - 350 m walk (Zi char / Mix Vegetables Rice, wanton noodles morning/day, indian rojak) I think this place is popular with the elderly in the mornings - there's a bird 'display' area next to it.

Famous Duck Rice / Porridge - Whampoa Hawker Centre

Whampoa Market has one of the best braised duck stalls in Singapore. With its sister Roasted duck stall on its right and the famous Hoover rojak on its left, the stall is easy to recognize but can be hard to catch. Business is so good it's usually sold out and closed by 6.00pm.

Ducks arranged neatly.

Cheap Zi Char Restaurant with Air-Con

The weather is so hot we'll either eat in or look for places with air-con. The nearest air-conditioned place to our place is this new zi char restaurant - 小青岛. I guess it is run by some Chinese cooks as their style of cooking reminds me of when I am in Shanghai!

Toa Payoh Hiang Ji Roasted Meat and Noodle House

Tucked away in a little corner opposite the Toa Payoh hub, we decided to try out this stall while we were there to run an errand. The roasted meat looks bright and fresh from the glass panels.

Overall, I like the char siew meat because they are just burnt

Fish Head Steamboat at Whampoa Market

We had fishhead steamboat at Whampoa Market with Mom and S. This is also the only fishhead steamboat we have tried - the one at the corner. So there are no comments as to which one is the "real" or "famous" one, but my mom says there's another stall that uses charcoal instead. *shrugs*

Nevertheless, it is still nice but I guess there's also a lot of MSG in the soup.

Ordered some other side dishes.

Some vege. And Hoover rojak.

Hoover rojak is so conveniently available here that we only have it when our guests are around. We will not, queue up for 20 minutes just to get it for ourselves.

First Fish Head Steamboat - The Corner Stall

Chuck and I got a chance to check out the newly renovated Whampoa Food Centre. On Friday we had the Hoover Rojak (heard it's famous but it was my first time hence I'm not sure if that's the actual stall anyway) and Duck Rice for lunch. On Saturday we had a very nice Fish Head Steamboat (鱼头炉) dinner!

Method: Portable Gas Cooker (It's either the soup is really really nice or I'm too hungry. *thumbs up*)

It's the stall from the corner of Blk 90 Whampoa Drive. Have seen some other stalls with fish head steamboat too but we have yet to try everything, so this is the first. No wonder they say Balestier is the land of fish head steamboat!

I also realized the hawker centre has 2 sections. While the one I was at (Blk 90) seems vibrant for a Saturday night, the other one looks empty as most of the stalls were not opened (Blk 91).

*shrugs* Good thing is - it's about 10 minutes walk away from my place! :)
